In October of 2003 I was diagnosed with bladder cancer. I had been peeing blood and was concerned about the cause. Many tests were preformed. At first the doctors said it was a urinary tract infection but when it didn't get better they ordered a Ct scan. The CT scan said I had kidney stones. When I didn't pass any stones they decided that I needed to go to a specialist. The specialist went in and took a look. What he found was transitional cell carcinoma: I was told that I would need surgery to remove the tumor. I was also informed that because this type of cancer was rare in people my age (28 at the time), and that the likely cause was smoking, there was a good chance that he would find another form of the cancer. This form would most likely be inoperatable.
On October 30th 2003 I underwent surgery. There is only one way into the bladder for a surgery of this type. They put you to sleep and then they stretch you out about the size of a quarter (yes it can be done). A couple of hours later I awoke from with a catheter but, I was cancer free. With many months of chemo treatments, to keep the cancer from returning, and years of exams I have remained cancer free.
